Swiss Jews are deeply shocked by the attack at Pittsburgh’s Synagogue

The attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during Shabbat services on October 27th, where there were 11 deaths and many injuries reported, has deeply shocked the Jewish population here. The Swiss Jewish community, represented by the two umbrella organizations the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) and the Platform of the Liberal Jews of Switzerland (PLJS), express their sympathy and condolences to the victims and their relatives.

During these difficult hours our solidarity is with the entire Jewish community in Pittsburgh, as well as in the United States. Attacking worshipers praying in a synagogue is appalling; there are no words to express this. It is an affront not only to the Jewish community worldwide, but also the entire society, which stands for peace and freedom.

In Europe it has been observed in recent years that the security situation for Jews has deteriorated. According to Swiss federal security authorities, the Jewish communities here are unfortunately also at increased risk. In view of this attack and the growing tendency towards intolerance and ostracism, the two umbrella organizations SIG and PLJS call on the people of Switzerland to make a commitment to show respect and consideration for all their fellow human beings, and to firmly oppose any destructive ideologies.
