To support teachers in addressing Jewish topics in class, the SIG provides a range of teaching aids.
JELED Teaching Aid
The SIG has acquired the JELED teaching resources package developed by the Federation of Dutch Jewish Communities and has adapted it for the religious schools of the Jewish communities of German speaking Switzerland. The programme consists of 65 workbooks for Jewish religious education at primary school level, and the website www.jeled.net for children, parents and teaching staff. The website is a joint project by the SIG and the Federation of Dutch Jewish Communities. Teachers are provided with a password to access the teacher section, which offers didactic advice for conducting religious classes and additional material.
The JELED package of teaching resources has been designed to teach children aged between six and twelve not attending Jewish day schools about the holidays and basic concepts of Judaism. The material is organised as a spiral curriculum, i.e. the subjects recur annually but at a higher level each time. The modular construction of the material makes it possible to teach mixed-age and mixed-experience groups at the same time and let the children work independently. For teaching staff, there is a set of teaching notes with didactic suggestions for all the workbooks.
Textbook on Jewish Ethics
The textbook offers a broad overview of current ethical questions from a Jewish perspective. 17 renowned authors expand on issues such as genetic engineering, assisted dying, ethics in politics and the economy, sexuality as well as environmental protection from a Jewish perspective. The first definitive work on Jewish ethics in German was jointly published by the Central Council of Jews in Germany (Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland) and the SIG. It is intended to be used in religious and ethics classes and should also serve as a guideline and inspiration for youths and adults.
