Commemorative publication

On the occasion of its first hundred years in 2004, the SIG issued a centennial publication entitled “Jewish Life and Culture in Switzerland – 100 years of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities”. This publication looks both backwards and forwards across the many aspects of the lives and co-existence of Jews in Switzerland.

A focal point of the book is the collection of articles by authors who reflect on their various viewpoints, existential concerns and perceptions regarding Judaism, Switzerland, Swiss Jews, Israel, Europe and other regions associated with the diaspora.

Wide range of subjects

Also covered are aspects of the history of the SIG as an institution, plus legal, demographic and political themes and the creativity of Jewish men and women in Switzerland in the fields of literature, theatre, music and the fine arts. The book also contains articles on the debates dealing with the role of Switzerland in the Second World War.

There are also informative discussions embracing philosophy, psychology, politics and religious history which shed light on more profound issues concerning the interpretation of Judaism and its relationship to the world. Closely related to the foregoing is the question of identity (or identities), which is examined in terms of individual life plans and general directional perspectives such as exist today in a pluralistic Judaism.

A detailed overview of the Jewish communities and institutions in Switzerland provides the finishing touch to this publication. It contains illustrations of works of art by Jewish artists living in Switzerland.
