Israel

The land of Israel has a central importance for the Jewish community, the Jewish religion and Judaism in general. Even Jews in Switzerland – though the majority are Swiss citizens – feel a close association with Israel and its inhabitants for historical, religious and cultural reasons. Many have family members in Israel and maintain friendships with people who live in Israel.

Sigi Feigel (1921-2004), long-time President of the Zurich Jewish Community ICZ and member of the management of the SIG, succinctly expressed this special relationship with Israel when he said, “Switzerland is my Fatherland, but Israel is my Motherland.”

No comments on the policies of the government of Israel

However, this association does not mean that the SIG represents the political interests of Israel. The SIG is not the voice of the Israeli government and on principle gives no statements regarding its policies. On the unsettled political issues in the Middle East there is no standard Jewish position. In Jewish circles too, there are widely diverging opinions on this subject.

The SIG, however, actively takes a stand whenever Israel’s right to exist is thrown into question, when Israel is measured by stricter standards than other countries, or when criticism of Israel is used as a smokescreen for anti-Semitic statements and acts.
